Know the signs

Signs a garage door cable has slipped or snapped

Door hangs crooked

One side sits lower than the other, or the door is jammed at an angle in the opening. The cable on the low side has lost tension.

Loose cable hanging

A steel cable dangling near the bottom corner of the door, or unwound and tangled around the drum at the top.

Door drops or slams on one side

The door closes hard or lurches as it moves because only one cable is carrying the weight.

Right after a broken spring

When a torsion spring breaks, the cables go slack and can jump off their drums. That’s why cable and spring problems often show up together.

Frayed strands

Rust or broken strands near the bottom bracket. A frayed cable is a warning; a snapped one can drop the door.

Opener strains or stops

The opener hums, stops partway or reverses because the door is binding on the side with the bad cable.

Our process

How we handle a garage door cable repair

1

Secure the door

We lock the door in place so nothing moves while we work and the springs can be safely unloaded.

2

Find the cause

We check the springs, drums, bottom brackets, rollers and tracks, so the cable doesn’t come off again next week.

3

Replace and re-wind

New lift cables are fitted to the bottom brackets and wound evenly onto both drums. We’ll tell you whether both cables should be replaced.

4

Balance and test

We set spring tension, check that the door sits level and test the opener force and auto-reverse before we leave.

Why it happens

Why do garage door cables come off or break?

The most common reason is a broken torsion spring. When the spring lets go, the cables lose tension, go slack and slip off the drums. Next is a door that came down on something, like a trash can or a bumper, which can lift one side and throw the cable off. Cables also wear out: the bottom few inches sit near the ground and pick up moisture and rust, and after enough years the strands start to break.

Less often, worn cable drums, a loose set screw on a drum, a bent bottom bracket or a door that’s partly off its track will let a cable slip. An opener that keeps pushing a binding door makes it worse. That’s why we look at the whole door, not just the cable you can see.

Cable or spring?

How to tell whether a cable or a spring broke

Look at the spring bar above the door, from a safe distance. A torsion spring with a clear gap in the coils is broken, and the cables usually come off as a result. If both springs look whole but one cable is slack or hanging, the cable or its drum is the problem. Either way, don’t try to wind or re-hang a cable yourself. The parts are under spring tension, and bottom brackets can release with real force.

On the phone we’ll ask a few quick questions, and the technician confirms it on-site. You get a written, no-cost estimate before any work starts, and there’s no service-call fee when we do the repair.

FAQ

Garage door cable repair questions

Can I use my garage door with a broken cable?

No. With one cable down, the door is carried by one side only and can fall or jam. Unplug the opener, leave the door where it is and call us.

Can I fix a garage door cable myself?

We don’t recommend it. The cables, drums and bottom brackets are under spring tension, and re-winding a cable without the right tools and steps is one of the riskier garage door jobs.

Why did my cable come off the drum?

Most often because a spring broke and the cable went slack. A door that hit something on the way down, worn drums or a door that’s off track are the other common causes. We find and fix the cause, not just the cable.

Do you repair garage door cables at night or on weekends?

Yes. We’re open 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays, across Dallas–Fort Worth.
