A broken spring is the most common garage door repair we handle across DFW. Every door is built a little differently, so the honest answer to “what will it cost?” is that it depends on your door. We don’t quote blind over the phone; we look at the door, explain what we find and give you a free estimate before any work starts. These are the things that make the biggest difference.
Torsion vs. extension springs
Most newer North Texas homes have torsion springs: one or two springs mounted on a bar above the door. Older and some single-car doors use extension springs that stretch along the horizontal tracks on each side. The two systems use different parts, hardware and safety cables, and they take different amounts of labor to replace safely. Some homeowners also choose to convert an older extension system to torsion for smoother, quieter operation.
Door weight and size
Springs are matched to the exact weight of your door. A single-car, non-insulated steel door needs very different springs than an insulated double door, a wood-look door or an oversized door on a three-car garage. Heavier doors need heavier-duty springs, and doors with added weight (a replacement panel, glass sections or decorative hardware) have to be measured so the new springs balance the door correctly.
Replacing one spring or both
If your door has two springs and only one broke, the other one has the same age and the same number of cycles on it. It’s usually close behind. Replacing both at the same visit keeps the door balanced and can save you a second service call a few months later. We’ll tell you what we see and let you decide.
Standard vs. high-cycle springs
Springs are rated by cycles (one open and one close). Builder-grade springs are rated for fewer cycles. High-cycle springs are built to last for many more. If your family uses the garage as the front door, a high-cycle upgrade often makes sense. Ask us about it at your estimate.
Cables, rollers and the rest of the door
When a spring snaps, the sudden release can fray lift cables, knock a cable off its drum or put extra stress on rollers and hinges. At the same visit we inspect the cables, drums, rollers, hinges and tracks, and we balance and test the door after the new springs go in. If anything else needs attention, we show you and quote it separately. Nothing gets added without your OK.
Timing
Same-day appointments are available when the schedule allows. Springs don’t always break at a convenient time, so our 24/7 emergency service covers nights, weekends and holidays. We’ll tell you up front if an after-hours visit changes your estimate.

Never try to wind or remove a torsion spring yourself. They store enough energy to cause serious injury. If a spring has broken, stop using the door and book a spring repair. For more background, see how long garage door springs last in Texas heat.
